we've had an amazing few days here in melbourne, sunny, warm (30 degrees celscius), not too humid and then some crazy thunderstorms late at night. last night as we were sitting on the couch watching toy story 2, the sky lit right up in 3 minute intervals. "do you want to go take some photos?" tom asked "can I stand on the garage roof?" I replied, to which tom answered a painstaking "no!". the lightening kept flashing, so i grabbed my tripod and camera bag and jumped in the car with absolutely no petrol. at first we headed to the foreshore where it was pelting with rain (not exactly the perfect elements for my camera) and we sat there for a good 15 minutes before realising the lightening was coming from the other side of the city. tom suggested albert park so away we went and found this amazing spot overlooking the water where the lightening struck right in our skyline view. it was then i realised that i hadn't actually brought the clip from my tripod that sits on the bottom of your camera so i couldn't even set myself up in order to get a long exposure shot. we sat inside the car and i resulted in resting my camera on my dash board, pointing to the sky and holding it in place. i pressed the shutter a few times and nothing happened. where did the storm go? i wanted to test the position of my camera and what it would look like with an 8" exposure so i pressed the button once more and BAM, lightening struck, my heart began racing and i tried my best to hold the camera steady for 8 seconds. the sky lit up and click, the picture was taken, stored in my memory card. i pressed replay and saw the huge lightening strike on my screen and my heart was in my throat, photography has never been so thrilling. unfortunately given the circumstances, my photo is relatively blurry and a bit mundane but i had to share it anyway. my first experience with chasing storms and i think i'm addicted.
